Ki Purbo Asmoro

An example of the pedhalangan terms "nganaki" or "mutrani" (descended from). The Kumbakarna on the left is from Ki Purbo Asmoro's antique 100-year old+ collection from Klathen, while the Kumbakarna on the right has been modelled after it (so the one on the left mutrani) and is part of the "state of the art" current collection he uses for most performances. In this example, Ki Purbo Asmoro decided to make an alteration and paint the body white, for use when Kumbakarna is leaving for battle (Kumbakarna Gugur), and when he is in the afterlife state (in lakon Makutharama, for example).

The Kumbakarna below is an example of what in pedhalangan is referred to as murgan or wayang mrogan--a form for a character that is newly created, and did not exist in classical wayang design. Ki Purbo Asmoro developed this form for Kumbakarna in early 2008. He wanted a Kumbakarna that exhibited the characteristics of a buta (ogre), but at the same time was striking and "good-looking"; different. Ki Purbo has used this form for the characters Sekipu (Gathutkaca Jedhi), Jajal Wreka (Makutharama), and Mamangdana (Ciptoning), but originally created it with the young, pre-war Kumbakarna in mind.
