Workshops and Performances at Jakarta International School
June 2, 2008

On June 2, 2008,  Ki Purbo Asmoro gave a full day of workshops and performances to 8-12 year-olds from over 40 different countries, at Jakarta International School. After the performances, students asked questions about his techniques, his background, and his favorite aspects of being a dhalang.

During the workshops, Ki Purbo focused on distinctions between characters (gait, voice, attitude, body posture). Since the students were most fascinated by his ability to flip wayang in the air during a battle or troop departure scene, he ended up adding a mini-practicum on wayang-flipping techniques. This is one of Ki Purbo Asmoro's strong points when he conducts workshops. No matter how detailed his plan may be beforehand, he is always keenly aware of audience interest, and instinctively, on the spot, adapts his workshops to fit each individual audience.
